Abstract:

Diagnosis of periodontitis is relatively simple, a dentist can identify a subject with periodontitis with the aid of a periodontal probe and radiographs. However, the traditional methods can not predict the disease onset and progression. More to say, these measures provide information primarily about the severity of the disease, but not about its activity. Another disadvantage is that diagnosis of periodontitis by means of periodontal probing and radiographs requires trained dentists, which can be troublesome in large-scale population surveys. Therefore there is always a need of simple, cost-effective, and sensitive methods for diagnosing different stages of periodontal disease. In this lecture, aim will be discuss the diagnostic properties of saliva as a reliable sample that can be easily and non-invasively collected, stored, and analyzed.
