Abstract

Peri-implant diseases is a rather new complication, and the international communities are still striving to systematize diagnoses, prevention and treatment. Definitions and diagnostic criteria are the foundation on which all treatment should be based. Even so, the criteria are still evolving and the scope of treatment of peri-implant diseases are influenced by our basic methods of examination.    Management of peri-implant diseases is divided into primordial prevention, primary prevention, secondary- and tertiary prevention in the new EFP guidelines. Hence, the prevention of disease begins prior to implant placement. It is a prerequisite to have a stable periodontal condition before placing implants. Is it possible to conclude from previous clinical guidelines when the situation is stable and the patient is ready for implant treatment? How could we monitor our implants and assess the effect of our treatments? The current lecture will try to highlight some of these questions with all its problems but hopefully also with some new solutions.
